- Arbitration: a method used to resolve disputes between law enforcement officers and superiors that allows officers to submit a formal complaint, often in regard to disciplinary action.
- CBA: collective bargaining agreement; a contract between a state, city, or other governing entity and a police union to establish rights, protections, and provisions for law enforcement officers.
- DPSST: Department of Public Safety Standards and Training; an Oregon state agency responsible for certifying and licensing police officers.
- Law Enforcement Officer Bill of Rights (LEOBOR)/Police Bill of Rights (PBOR): a set of legal provisions that establish the due process rights of police officers during internal misconduct investigations.
- Meet and confer agreement: a labor agreement contract between the union and a governing entity that resolves disputes.
- Misconduct: a constitutional violation or wrongdoing by a law enforcement officer.
- MOA: memorandum of agreement; a legally binding written document between a state, city, or other governing entity and a police union to establish an agreed-upon objective.
- MOU: memorandum of understanding; a non-binding written agreement between a state, city, or other governing entity and a police union regarding certain terms and conditions of law enforcement employment.
- POST: Peace Officers Standards and Training; a board or council of people appointed by the governor to set the minimum educational requirements for police officers.
- TCOLE: Texas Commission on Law Enforcement; a state agency responsible for establishing standards for law enforcement officers.
